'Ghost Rider' sets fire to North American box office

Ghost Rider," a Marvel comic adapted for the silver screen, blazed to the top of the North American box office this weekend, earning an estimated 44.5 million for the Nicolas Cage action flick. Cage, who stars as stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze who sells his soul and fights for justice with his head on fire is set to become the top opening film of Cage's career. Also opening this weekend was "Bridge to Terabithia," with an estimated take of 22 million dollars, according to preliminary figures from box office tracker Media By Numbers. Final figures are to be released Monday. The movie is based on the Katherine Paterson novel about two friends who discover a magical kingdom where they reign as king and queen. Last week's top film, the larger-than-life Eddie Murphy comedy, "Norbit," slipped to third with an estimated 16.8 million dollars. "Music and Lyrics," the romantic comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant, came in fourth its opening weekend with an estimated 14 million dollars in ticket sales. The film opened Wednesday, which was Valentine's Day. "Daddy's Little Girls," about a wealthy female attorney who falls for a mechanic who is a single father with three children, debuted in fifth with a take of 12.1 million dollars. Rounding out the top twelve were: "Breach" (10.4 million); "Hannibal Rising" (5.5 million); "Because I Said So" (5.0 million); "The Messengers" (3.8 million); "Night at the Museum" (3.7 million); "Pan's Labyrinth" (2.2 million); "Smokin' Aces" (1.4 million). The 12 top movies combined grossed 141.4 million, a 54 percent jump from last weekend's 91.8 million take. Total ticket sales were also up 27.8 percent from last year's 110.7 million gross.
