"Alatriste", "Volver" among Spanish Goya prize nominations
2006-12-18
Alatriste" by Agustin Diaz Yanes, Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" and "El laberinto del fauno" by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro have taken the lion's share of nominations for Goya prizes, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars. "Alatriste", the story of a 17th century soldier-turned-mercenary starring Viggo Mortensen, headed the list with 15 nominations, with "Volver" (return), starring Penelope Cruz, taking 14 and "El laberinto del fauno" (Pan's labyrinth), garnering 13. "Alatriste", a screenplay based on a series of novels by Arturo Perez-Reverte, is up for a swathe of categories, including best film and best director, while US actor Mortensen has been nominated for the best actor award. Mortensen faces tough competition from Spaniards Sergi Lopez from "El laberinto del fauno", Juan Diego ("Vete de mi") and German youngster Daniel Bruehl, who starred in "Salvador" playing a Catalan anarchist executed by the Franco regime in 1974. Cruz is in line to claim best actress but faces rival claims from Maribel Verdu for her starring role in "El laberinto del fauno", as well as Marta Etura for "Azul oscuro casi negro" (dark blue, almost black), and Silvia Abascal for "La dama boba" (the idiot maiden). Almodovar goes head to head with Diaz Yanes, Del Toro and "Salvador"'s Manuel Huerga for best director. Spain's Academia of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences (AACCE) will announce the awards in Madrid in the final week of January.
