"Independence Day" duo lose studio deal
2001-01-06
HOLLYWOOD - It seems "Independence Day" really is coming for director Roland Emmerich and producing partner Dean Devlin, Variety reported. Insiders at Columbia say the studio will not renew its deal with the duo's Centropolis Entertainment banner. The two made an enormous splash with their 1996 action film "Independence Day," which raked in a boffo $809 million around the world. But subsequent pictures like 1998's "Godzilla" and 2000's "The Patriot" saw budgets balloon and grosses stumble: their pricey reimagining of "Godzilla" grossed $379 million worldwide, and "The Patriot" managed only $215 million worldwide. A spokeswoman at Centropolis called the parting "mutually agreed upon" in order that Devlin and Emmerich might fully explore all options, from creating a self-financed venture to landing another studio-based first-look production deal. Both Devlin and Emmerich were unavailable for comment; both were on location in Arizona preparing the $30 million suspense film "Arak Attack" for Warner Bros.
