It's a date: 'TomKat' to tie the knot in Italy next month
2006-10-25
Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise and fiancee Katie Holmes lifted the veil on their wedding plans, confirming they will tie the knot at a ceremony in Italy next month. Cruise, 44, and Holmes, 27, will exchange their nuptials at an undisclosed location in Italy on November 18, Cruise's Los Angeles-based spokesman Arnold Robinson confirmed to AFP via email. Holmes will wear a dress designed by Giorgio Armani, Robinson added. No further information was immediately available. Confirmation of Cruise and Holmes' wedding plans ended a long-running guessing game that has been chewed over by US tabloids ever since the couple announced their engagement to the world in Paris in June 2005. The couple, who have been nicknamed 'TomKat' by US media, celebrated the birth of their daughter Suri in April. Cruise and Holmes were first seen in public together 12 months earlier -- in Rome -- where the "Mission Impossible", "Top Gun" and "Rain Man" star was attending an awards ceremony. Cruise breathlessly told reporters at the event that Holmes was "an extraordinary woman", triggering a wave of headlines over the ensuing months that culminated with the actor's famous appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show. During an interview with Winfrey, Cruise leapt onto the couch to profess his undying love for Holmes, antics that raised eyebrows across the entertainment industry and made the actor the butt of jokes for months afterwards. Cruise and Holmes's engagement was viewed with cynicism by sections of US media, who speculated the romance was manufactured to bolster publicity for Holmes' movie "Batman Begins" and Cruise's blockbuster "War of the Worlds." Cruise, who has been married twice before, most recently to Oscar-winning screen goddess Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two adopted children, said earlier this year that he and Holmes had delayed their wedding because they wanted their daughter to attend. "In many ways we feel like we already are married," he told Good Housekeeping. "I know I'm with the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. So the wedding -- that's just the party." People magazine said Holmes had recently travelled to Italy, possibly to check out wedding venues a shopping trip to Paris. She told the magazine she'd decided on her wedding gown saying: "I already have my dress." Cruise's dervish-like behaviour on the Oprah Winfrey show and criticism of Brooke Shields for her use of anti-depressants following the birth of her child, were cited as a reason for Paramount Pictures parent Viacom to sever links to the actor in August. Cruise, a fervent member of the Church of Scientology, has long succeeded in showing to the public only those aspects of his private life that he wishes to have revealed.
