filed his petition Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing ``irreconcilable differences'' with Arquette, 31, whom he married in 1995. ``It was a mutual decision and it was amicable,'' said Simon Halls, a publicist for Arquette, star of the 1996 comedy ''Flirting with Disaster'' and last year's films ``Stigmata'' and ``Goodbye Lover.''
A spokeswoman for Cage confirmed that the couple was seeking a divorce but declined to comment further. Cage and Arquette each has one son from previous relationships but no children together.
Cage, the nephew of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, made his motion picture debut in 1982's ``Fast Times at Ridgemont High'' and first gained fame in 1987's ``Raising Arizona'' and ''Moonstruck.''
He won an Academy Award for best actor for his role as an alcoholic drinking himself to death in 1995's low-budget ''Leaving Las Vegas.''
The couple appeared together for the first time in 1999's ''Bringing Out the Dead,'' in which Cage starred as a New York paramedic haunted by visions of people he could not save and Arquette played the daughter of a heart attack victim.
