'King Kong' rules in Chinese movie theatres
2006-03-01
Hollywood blockbuster "King Kong" has reportedly become the most successful imported film in China for the past five years. The ape epic had generated 100.3 million yuan (12 million dollars) in Chinese theatres since its release on January 12, Xinhua news agency said. That put it just behind "Pearl Harbor," which earned 105 million yuan (13 million dollars) after its release in 2001, it said. The box office record among foreign movies was still held by "Titanic," which generated ticket sales of 320 million yuan (40 million dollars), it said. Chinese moviegoers divide their time almost evenly between local and foreign films, with imported titles usually slightly more popular. In 2004, the most recent data available, Chinese movies had the upper hand, generating 55 percent of the 1.5 billion yuan (185 million dollars) of box office revenue.
